Having been quite moved by the music for the Gears of War 2 ads (How it Ends - Devotchka) I was interested on what people thought of this, and if the ad music has ever compelled you to buy a game (or the in game music stopped you from playing it!)

Following on from their clever use of 'Mad World' for the first Gears of War game, I have to say I'm more than impressed with whoever comes up with their ads. After seeing the GoW2 ad a few times, I felt compelled to go out and get the Devotchka album it is featured on - and I wasn't disappointed :) Heck I may even end up buying Gears of War! lol.

In game music, the crap music from 'A Rockstar Ate my Hamster' fills me with an inane kind of joy. I also like the continual music used in the Elder Scrolls series of games from Bethesda, but I think it kind of spoils the gameplay by changing the score when you are 'in danger' - bit too much of a giveaway :biggrin

Anything that stands out for anyone else?

That is one of my all time favourite games. The C64 version is epic! Best score I ever got on that was 3 number ones (when I played it again for the first time in years 2 months ago). I don't know anyone who has ever finished that game on any platform even with cheats.

My fave music is hands down the OST to Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII and Mother 3.

The Final Fantasy VI opera CD is incredible as is the piano collection. Stand out track for me is Coin Song from Final Fantasy VI Piano Collection.

The Star Ocean OST collections are great too! And Secret of Mana for the SNES.

Not sure I have ever been tempted to buy a game because of the music. But Gorecki by Lamb (new tomb raider game) is an ace tune.

As for music in a game, I like the main music for the games Final Fight, Stryx and revenge of shinobi.

The original Tomb Raider music by Nathan McCree is beyond awesome - the music that plays when you first walk into the Coliseum, and when you first see the Sphinx in all its hugeness will live with me forever.

For some reason the theme music to 'Bounder' on the C64 has always stuck with me - annoying as hell, but I still have it in my head today, 20 years later :)

But for me, the absolute apex of video game music is the work of Akira Yamaoka in the first Silent Hill game. Beautiful, melancholy, haunting and downright ****ing scary.

I forgot to mention sound effects if that is permitted in this thread. My vote goes to Thief.

I will never forget the first time I played that game. There is a level where you have to sneak in to an illegal basement casino in a castle and steal treasures from a safe and get out alive again.

Those first brave steps you take down the torchlit stairwell, you quench all the flames near the entrance to hide yourself and then shriek in sheer terror when a burly English voice bellows in your ear asking just what the hell are you playing at!

    BRILLIANT!

Close second would have to be Aliens (the Activision version) on the C64. That game terrifies me to this day!

I loved the Mass Effect sound track
just like movies, I have bought games just because of the music
not soley to listen to the music, but because it makes me feel the atmosphere of the game must be cool
I've been disappointed a few times, but mostly I'm impressed

The music used in Nitro - a car game from my youth :) (an amiga title I think). There were no words but I still remember the tune and it reminds me of playing against my brother. Aw I feel all nostaligic now.
Also I still remember the music from "It Came From the Desert" - when you try and escape the hospital.

Wicked thread - Its brought back alot of memories :biggrin

the old outrun or the new one? both had nice soundtracks. the trailer for the new outrun online arcade is catchy. I think its still from the new outrun games:

Surprised no one has mention chrono trigger on the snes. for its time, the music was amazing for a snes hardware.

Deffo the old Outrun. Got to love Splash Wave and Magical Sound Shower!

Chrono Trigger I agree was awesome, but you simply cannot compare it to the full blown opera spectacular of Aria di Mezzo Carattere in Final Fantasy VI, simply breathtaking stuff for a little SNES game!

The opening music from Vampires: The Masquerade - Bloodlines was awesome (Angel from Massive Attack's Mezzanine album, or very loosly based on it, at least). Now whenever I hear it I associate it with vampires and all that, would make brilliant background music to a horror film

I used to get absolutely mesmerised by the music in Dune and Dune II by Cryo. Saying that, who can forget In the Hall of the Mountain King playing in Manic Miner ?

As for all the new stuff, well it's ok :biggrin
