Just to echo FlashDangerpants, look on the MS site for the Evaluation or trial versions. I used Win7 Enterprise/Ultimate and Server 2008R2 versions just last year, and they were definitely available then for free from the MS site. You may need to register.
Combine these with either some spare hardware (or vmware player/virtualbox, a decent processor and a solid chuck of RAM) and you can get quite familiar with the real OS.
