Yes just make sure you have the RAID drivers on Floppy for the install, you'll have to use the old F6 via detecting hardware.

    Raptors yes nice and fast

I used XP 64bit when it first came out and stopped using it, lack if antivirus software etc at the time.
Support has improved a little, but you'll have to check compatibility bigtime.

But i Presume this chap has ready spec'd each job anyway.... anyway good news!

All the specs were already done but I had the OS wrong it isn't XP 64, it's Vista Ultimate.

The system I have to build with XP 64 is going print server for some reason.

that's what it says on the sheet, only to be used for printing from a network.

Windows XP = not a Server OS
64bit = pain in the ar5e for some printer drivers.

Do you know how many PCs are going to be connecting to this print server?

I don't know exactly but have been told it will be less than 8. It's only for a 4 man operation. That's about all I know.

Ahh, might have been better going for a a 32bit OS to be honest.

Anyways you get paid to build PCs, thats the main thing! :biggrin

yep, I am just gonna build what it says. Maybe I should get in contact with the guy and tell him 64bit one is dodgy and he should go for the 32bit OS to save him and probably me any hassle.

I got a compaq server delivered today my instructions were to investigate why it's overheating

Answer = dust, I'm gonna have to invest in a bloody face make and goggles before I blow out the dust. It's about an inch thick in places :biggrin

I also might have to replace the HSF as it sounds like it's on it's last legs, unless blowing out the dust helps.

Seems a bit odd to go for 64-bit XP as a print server to me as well! I understand if the company wants to cut down on costs and has decided that 2K3 (or 2K8) server is a bit overkill for a print server, but the only 'real' benefit to having a 64-bit O/S running on a workstation in that situation would be to pump more than 4Gb of RAM into it. As a print server for four pees, that's about as overkill as its possible to get!

I also concur with Sparky - 64 bit print drivers are a pain in the arse to get hold of. Still, they're the client - I can think of plenty of occasions where I've done small private jobs that have left me scratching my head in puzzlement!
