Er - since when have you needed drivers for a standard ATA drive?

Why do you think you need one?

err exactly! otherwise try installing using kernel 2.6 by typing
    HTML:
    linux26
at the boot prompt - they have added hardware support

EDIT:Zimbo it just seems to say cannot find linux26 when i type that at the boot prompt

It is being a bit confusing here. You *don't* need drivers for standard IDE drives. Because it can't find the drive by ordinary means it assumes you have something weird, like SCSI etc so asks for drivers.

Nearly all Unix/Linux kernals support ATA out of the box. There is something else wrong to cause this.

How about telling us about the motherboard and the connections, and just what exactly you are doing when this error appears?

Is the drive being auto detected by the BIOS?

    A quick check:

Boot using a Win98SE boot floppy, and run fdisk. Does it see the drive?

Hm - then I would suspect an incompatability between the distribution you are using and the motherboard or chipset.

Clutching-at-straws time - if this is RH9 did you run the CD self-check?
