Driver question

    crazy question: can you use a plain old crappy netgear router as a switch?

    I did this between my old and new pc's to transfer heaps of stuff, i used a crossover cable which i finally managed to purchase after trawling round Bristol for hours, in maplins.
    I even went to 2 different branches of pc world only to be told "we dont keep them in stock as we dont really get asked for them" :blink

    That should work

    Would have thought that both pcs would need to be connected directly into it and, they MAY need static ip addresses.

    if the router is intelligent then it will issue you ip address and you won't need to bother with the above. If it is a hub then it won't.




    You know you could always connect the old drive to the new computer (if compatible) then pick up the data that way...

    I'll give it a try on Saturday when I have time, I'll try and get a crossover cable in the meantime. Cheers for your advice.

    you can transfer the data as long using the router as you have spare ethernet ports.
