    Hi All

I find this topic interesting as it varies from employer to employer. I work for VMware as a Solution Engineer, and as a part of that, my employer requests that we're at least VMware Certified Professional (VCP) certified. We do this because we believe in the benefits of being certified, and to ensure a consisten level of knowledge across our teams. Its also easy to measure across all SE's globally. I'd imagine all vendors are the same, Microsoft, Google etc.

When I worked for a Systems Integrator, they would give us awards for passing certifications. Does your employer do anything like this?

    Thanks
    Jim

In IT, no... Which imo is a shame, at least if there was a stated requirement, there would be a bigger budget for training...

That’s a great point that I had not considered. Usually if they require you to gain certain things, they set aside budget for courses and exams.

Not at all now– when I was working at a MSP previously it was beneficial and vendors always liked it if we were certified on whatever product we were selling\installing – this would be training for the sales and tech guys so everything was covered.

Now I’m in-house IT manager guy (completely different world to MSP\Vendor) I set the cert requirements for the guys in my team.

Some are not interested in certs but we do encourage learning\testing new products and keeping up to speed with industry trends – I don’t think not taking certs for these guys is causing any issues based on how much experience they had (almost 20 years) and what I expect of them in their current job role.

In saying that I have some new guys starting that have A+ on their CVs – also just recently passed and some entry level Cisco certs – for them if they are interested in further certification I will find out the best way to help them achieve this.

For me even though I spend most of my time looking at spreadsheets now and complaining to suppliers I still try to keep up to speed with certs – currently looking at SC-900 and maybe AZ-800\801 after that. :)

Great work Sparky and totally get it. I think once you’ve been in IT for as long as us, it gets more optional. That said. Similar to you. It’s still great to have that framework of things to learn and an exam to test if you know a certain thing
