    Just to end this thread,

I return the Realtek NIC (branded as PCline) to shop and exchange it for a more expensive Belkin NIC, a whopping £5 more.
Imagine my suprise when I install the new NIC, discover it works fine without even installing the CD-ROM drivers and then check device manager to find....It's only an identical RealTek NIC rebranded as a Belkin!
Why this one works no problemo and the other would'nt work for love nor money is anyone guess.
I considered returning it and swapping for another PCline one but am so happy I have the damn thing working I am unwilling to risk anymore grief.

Thanks to all who replied. :biggrin :eyecrazy

Sorry to extend your thread but I think the real solution here is that you just got a bad card. It happens.
