Thats Exchange 2007 installed on my main DC with Hub Transport, Client Access & Mailbox Roles.

As stated earlier laptop throwing a bit of a wobbly.

I will finish off all the rest of the configurations tomorrow, as I'm a bit pre occupied thinking about investing in an ML115.

Looks like you are turning into a cert machine mate! :biggrin

    Few points if I may...

The client access role is more like a front end server tbh. The edge transport role is unique in some respects as it doesn’t need to be part of the same domain as the rest of the Exchange organisation and the only traffic you would put through it is SMTP for AV\Spam filtering. The front end server in Exchange 2003 offers an active sync gateway which in now the client access role as you have already mentioned.

    More on roles here.

    http://www.msexchange.org/tutorials/Introduction-Exchange-2007-Server-Roles.html

Also there is the unified messaging role but I don’t think that will feature too much in the exam, well I hope not anyway!

Cheers for the words of wisdom mate, always appreciated!

So what have I been upto in the last hour, well I have just finished updated some Exchange Patches, and added Exchange Server Admin roles. Installed a Self Signed Certificate Authority and tested OWA which is working sweet.

I'm about to add Forefront in a minute to see what that's like.

The price on dabs has gone up to £273, still cheap and in stock at Ebuyer. but wont be for long

You also dont need ECC ram, will run on normal PC2-6400

    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168131

I do recommend ESXi 4 on a USB stick internally and a single PCI-E nic for the VMs, leave the onboard for the ESXi management

Can you guys not borrow a server from work? Small price for the employer to pay for the amount of time you are putting into your certs. 8)

Thats what I used to do originally before buying some kit for home use. Some of the other nerds heard I didn't have a server at home and I had a reputation to protect  Remoting into the works lab got me no respect  (note to self, get a life ha)

LOL! Yes, there is some competition at my work to who has the best lab.

Obviously mine is the best ( :biggrin ) but I’ve downsized since the MCSE days when I had 4 domains, front and back end Exchange Servers and an ISA server. I managed to get a stack of servers from my last work when I was made redundant so they came in handy for the MCSE trek.

Most of them are packed away but I needed to use a couple a few weeks back when I was testing a Windows 2000 – 2003 migration with some third party applications.

At the moment I dual boot my PC so it runs as a Server 2008 DC and I have one member server running Exchange 2007 and hyper-v.

Ha ha glad its not just at my work then!

Oh yeah you need a decent lab for your MCSE I've found, its essential the amount of things I break! I had the chance to get some kit from work but it was ancient and massive and the little lady wouldn't of let it over the threshold. Bit like a Vampire, she has to invite my kit in or the laws of nature won't allow it in our house

Jammy enough I made up for having to buy my own server by bagging a ton of kick ass Cisco kit I'll start playing with in the new year. Hopefully then I'll get some more street cred from our techies :biggrin

My ML115 just runs 2008 R2 at the moment with my lab servers/clients on Hyper-V (needed to for 70-652). I plan on wiping it all clean and doing the good old ESX usb melarky when I can get the time, probably after my MCSE when ever thats gonna be

So Craigie, you know when you've created all of these great labs (I've set them up as you did myself), have you done it all just on your laptop?! Your a legend if you have. I'm too impatient!

Today, I haven't been able to do any studying. However, I have rebuilt two IIS Default Exchange Websites and edited the MetaFrame on both to rebuild the buggers.

One was a borked SBS 2003 install where we had the 500 errors when trying to synch via iPhones. More can be found here

The other was for Outlook Anywhere on a Exchange Enterprise Edition, which didn't work after I had configured all the SSL for it. In the end we had to get Microsoft involved and after 3 hours they found a reg key that was the issue. The client neglected to tell us that the Exchange box wasn't the original and had been migrated across after another server died.

Oh and this is a great website that tests pretty much everything Exchange Remotely https://www.testexchangeconnectivity.com/

Thats spot on that mate. Other people have asked me how I've setup my VM's for this and that exam and every time I tell them to look at yours. If the works ha already been done and done well I don;t see the point in trying to get creative :biggrin

Don't worry mate, I love my laptop too :biggrin You deffo deserve a server tho so I'd get my letter off to Santa now if I were you :D

You will stumble across many a borked SBS mate. Sometimes I do think "WTF?!??" when I see how some have been setup.

Just a wee SBS tip for you. If you are having IIS issues in SBS then run the internet connection wizard again. The chances are that it was never run and thats why some components do not work correctly.

This is one of the biggest mistakes when a SBS is installed.

Just another wee Active Sync testing tool for ya as well. :biggrin
