There is a small heatsink over a chip near the CPU. This heatsink is not connected to the motherboard in any way. In other words there are no clips. If you apply slight pressure to this heatsink is does move. Is this normal or should it be absolutely rigid? How is it held in place? Many thanks.

this is probably the southbridge do not allow that heatsink to come of what so ever. I don't think it should move though.

How is it secured over the chip? I might need to re-seat it. Is there a special 'glue' for this purpose, as there are no supporting brackets?

not sure about that, you never normally need to do anything with chips already on the mobo.

    Thanks BM, my point exactly.

The heatsink for this controller is secured by a special glue, the manufacturer can tell if you remove the heatsink and doing so will void your warranty. Don't do it yourself, send it back to the manufacturer.

Now that I'm more awake, I remembered to mention/question wether or not you have overclocked any of the hardware? Either way, I think it would be a fail safe idea to go into the Bios and "Restore Default Safe Settings" or whatever it's called :p

Is this mobo second hand? or did you build the system yourself?

The heatsink on the southbridge should not be moving and can only be doing that if its been knocked or not built properly.

If it is a new motherboard send it back, as dave says you should not be messing around with that heatsink otherwise you will void the warranty.

Although I would suggest you remove the motherboard rather than the heatsink. :biggrin
