    Hiya all,

I'm currently working on a pc for a client. It is running windows 98 and I had to reinstall the operating system and it now works fine.

However I cannot get the modem to work properly. It will detect it and install the drivers but when I try to connect it says "modem not detected, or in use or not turned on". It is a connexant 56k modem.

I can't work this out at all - I am sure I have the right drivers. One strange thing is when I look at the modem in device manager the modem name displays for a few seconds and then dissapears. If I quickly click on it before it vanishes it gives the error message "cannot read port name from registry"

Can anybody help me with this at all - I'm getting really worried about not being able to fix this !

    Thanks !

    Martin

Is it an internal or external modem Flame? If it is internal pull it out and reseat it. If it external are you sure it in the right port? I had an external rockwell once and sometimes I would plug it into the wrong port and it would tell me modem not detective.

Win98 is notoriously cr@p at hardware detection, If you can't locate and download the latest driver from the manufacturer's website, it may well be quicker in the long run just to shell out ~£20 for a new one and try and absorb it into your costs.

EDIT: Sorry, should have started by saying I'd say it's almost certainly a bad drvier issue, IMHO

    IMHO :)

really there should be about 5 com ports and if ur only restricted to com 1 then I would do what the others say and probably get a new modem or try and see if the PC will locate the other ports for you. but if your talking about the physical port on the modem itself then u wud have to buy another modem...

Thanks all - I was talking about logical com ports not physical ones.

Anyway I gave up and upgraded the machine to XP - which is cheating really I guess.

Maybe this site will help you.

If it was me. I would go into safe mode than into device manager and see what it says for your modem. Make sure there is only one there. You can uninstall a modem and not see it but for some reason it will still be there and can only see it when your in safe mode. I always uninstall a modem from safe mode.

Yep xp is amazing - it detected the modem and installed it without me doind anything. Then it made me a cup of tea and discovered a cure for the common cold. :D

Er - rather than hijacking an antique thread you would do better to start a new one.

You need a XP upgrade disk.
