    Just a quick on [IMG]

How can you connect 2 XP pro machine to each other via a dial up connection.

The reason I ask is that my man at the local shop want to connect to his home machine to share files etc. Both machines use a dial up connection and use an isp to assign IP addresses, no fixed IP addresses.

The first thing that occurs is to use something like PC Anywhere and just use a direct connection. The problem you'll get if you try to connect via ISP over the internet will be how to get the remote machine to dial up to the net when you want to access it. I don't think it's impossible just it'd be a pain in the backside.

I agree with Phil - without static IPs (don't laugh, people do have these on dial-up), "your man at the local shop 8) " will find his file-sharing rather restricted......

EDIT: Wait a minute, I'm sure you can use RRAS to set of a VPN, then set the remote PC to call-back to the local machine..or am I barking up the wrong end of the misunderstanding ?

I don't think you need to go via the Internet. Just set up one machine to accept incomming connections and the other to dial up to a private network.

OK but how to set the pc up to accept incoming connections from a phone line?

In XP, go to Network Connections> Create New Connection> Setup Advanced Connection> Incoming Connection.

    Should do the job :D
