I was asked today by a friend who doesn't work in IT, what would be the first step to making her CV look more geared towards a career in IT.

My first instinct was to say the CompTIA A+, as that's traditionally been the foundation for someone who wants to work in the IT infrastructure world. I decided to check if that's still the case, and was surprised to see that there's now a certification that preceeds the A+, which is aimed at helping people to understand the basics of how a computer works, how to repair it etc.

The ITF+ looks to be a really good way to see if this is for you. There are a great many fields in IT so it may be that IT support, architecture and design isn't for you. You might want to become a programmer or a security specialist. CompTIA has it all it seems.
