BCS members have voted strongly in favour of the proposal to enable BCS to establish a registration body that can license other bodies to award the Society's CITP status.

The proposal was endorsed by 91.2% of the members who voted.

This means the changes can now go to the Privy Council, which oversees royal charters, for approval.

BCS is about raising standards, and the standing of IT, for the entire profession. Bringing other professional bodies on board will increase the recognition and status of individual professionals and further raise awareness amongst employers.

BCS President Alan Pollard said, 'The IT profession now encompasses everything from business change to service delivery, from information security to solutions architecture. Consequently there are significant numbers of IT professionals belonging to other professional bodies in areas such as engineering, accountancy and information management.

'By licensing other bodies to award CITP, we can join forces to make it a truly world class standard, increasing the recognition and standing of the profession in the UK and internationally.'

BCS will continue to own CITP, overseeing the licensing of organisations, including itself, and will not only set the rules for licensing other bodies but retain ownership and control of the standard
