Hey guys just asking for a bit of advice.
I just recently passed my CCNA exam and have decided to start to study for the Cisco Firewall Specialist. The only self study materials I can find are for the old exams. Does anyone know if these 'old' books will be enough for me to pass the new Firewall certification exam?
Also what would be the cheapest firewall to purchase as well in order for me to get hands on experience, I currently have 3 2501 routers and a few 1900 switches in my lab.
Any help would be much appreciated, many thanks.

Greetings. I tried searching on the Cisco Press (clickable link) site but nothing immediately came up. If Cisco Press doesn't have it, it doesn't exist. You might try nosing around the site and seeing if you come up with something.

    You going for the CCSP?

I saw some books for that going for bargain basement prices then promply found out (from here) that the security exams are getting a re-vamp.

I'd assume that the new security exams will require new books, I wouldn't pay out for old books that are now redundant.

    Buy a PIX instead :p

Yeah I intend buying a PIX just wondering which would be the best one at the cheapest price which will suffice for me to get enough hands on experience to pass

For the old exam I used Cisco Press Book

CCSP Self Study: Cisco Secure Pix Firewall Advanced (CSPFA)
    by
    Behzad Behtash

Although this was for the old exam and PIX software version 6.3 it still is a good read (although quite thick) and still covers alot of examable topics in the new exam. You probably can pick up a like new or used copy at Amazon for not too much?

Concerning the new exam if you go to Cisco Press--->Cisco Cert Info------>CSSP
It takes you to a section about CSSP and their you can see the different exams and their current publications.

Concerning the new firewall exam CCSP 642-522 SNPA Exam, it says their will be a new exam cert guide in april 2006 but if you can't wait that long then they have published new CCSP flash cards and exam practice which will have a section covering this exam (the summary notes are usually quite good in these books)

plus another book which I purchased was
Cisco ASA and PIX Firewall Handbook
    by
    Dave Hucaby
although not a specific exam guide it does cover the IOS ver 7 and I can recommend (look at amazon.com for good reviews). I also Hucaby's switching book which is also a good read and the author I believe is very good at putting complex information across so you can understand it help.

I have this book on my desk at work and comes in useful quite a lot. There is a particular good chapter on verifying firewall operation including capture commands.

    Hope this helps.

If you are thinking about equipment then you need to be careful.

I believe they are removing the lower end models, end-of-sale, and you need to have specific IOS licences if you want to look at doing any failover (that is of course if you buy two).

Note: Only the higher end models although failover, 515E, 525, 535

It might be easier and less costly to locate a remote lab which will have the fw equipment you require.

I think that the exam will probably be the same cost as the other cisco exams which is about £115.8)
