Changing subnet masks when subnetting

    Do different subnets on the same network always need to have same subnet mask? Say you have two subnets that both have a /24 mask. If you need to expand the number of hosts on one subnet by so much that it will need a /23 mask but the other subnet does not need any additional hosts, do you still also need to change the other subnet's mask to /23? Are there any problems if you don't do this?

    No. This technic is called VLSM, Variable Lenght Subnet Masking. You just use the mask you need to support the users.
