I have read many times that certifications don't help much in the world of programming, they are taken more seriously in IT networking, server administration and technical fields.

The best way to progress with programming is to learn as much as you can from books and implement it in your own projects. write programs, become super proficient, so that you have something tangible to show prospective employers.
