I would certainly like to be earning the so called average for an IT worker, but I earn significantly less. I do enjoy my job though and get some pretty good benefits (well I consider them good anyway). For a start there is a good pension, the hours are pretty low (37hours a week) and my employer is also very good when it comes to taking time off due to illness (which I had to do quite a bit last year). Finally, it's as secure as a job can be these days and that might be something that is very desirable to have given the current economic climate.

The grass always seems greener elsewhere but it's sometimes good to realise that what you currently have isn't so bad ... :)

Why would that make you glad? You should be glad if I was raking in the bucks, which would bode quite well for your career outlook, considering we're both writers. ;)

    I will say this: I ain't wealthy... but I ain't poor either. :)

If I were to pick money over hapiness, then I would probably be a lawyer. It bodes well for me with how content you are in your work, and how well it works with your home life. :biggrin

Plus I saw the size of your Christmas tree in that 'I look like Bon Jovi' picture. I bet you could fit a helluva lot of presents under there. You ain't doing too bad

Umm... that was the Christmas tree at Portrait Innovations at Cool Springs Galleria. I bet they'd let me put presents there if I asked nicely... :rendeer:fatherxma

My Christmas tree is a hand-me-down seven-or-eight foot fake tree that I struggle to get in and out of the box every year. :unsure

That said... I am quite content with my work, and the feeling of accomplishment - knowing that I'm helping people to become better techs - is wonderful. :)

I've voted - mine is slightly higher than others for the rather limited role (desktop support) and thats down to having SC clearance.

Had a quick read through the thread and as soon as you mentioned Milton Keynes and DV, I thought it would be the FCO - nearly considered a contracting helpdesk job there for £18ph.

My question, which was touched on earlier in the thread, is it worth keeping the clearance going (ie, staying with SC cleared jobs) or worth throwing it away and getting out into the world??

Not as far as I'm aware. You could work it out though if you like. It's got a nice even 100 so knock yourself out :)
