Well, I'm in the US where cost of living is lower... but perhaps my vote won't throw off the overall numbers. :)

Well, we also tend to make less, after currently conversion. Still, I think the lower costs outweigh the lower salaries - I've heard what you guys have to pay for petrol and houses! :blink

A bit of the same for me, although some quick research shows Canadian salaries typically lower than US at equivalent positions.

Put in my vote with the conversion thrown in. I'll be happy when I can move from Michigan and move to an area that has more of a thriving economy and of course a better pay scale. :)

I agree with that. I know I can get paid more doing my job in the states but what keeps me here is the experience, the work environment, my boss, colleagues, etc. I couldn't be happier.

Mike - The US guy at my parent company doing the equivalent of my job (better than me too, I might add - and it takes a LOT for me to admit that LOL) earns almost the exact same amount as me (at the exchange rate of about eight months ago)

Got to say that I completley disagree with this statement.

First of all IT contractors are normally paid more money as they do not command such things as:

    Holiday Pay
    Sick Pay
    Death In Service Benefits
    Pension Entitlement
    Company Shares
    Company Care

These things combined raise the average joe's wages by approximately 25% depending on scheme entitlements compared to a contractors.

Contractors have no certainty in relation to income.

Before moving into IT, I did alot of research before jumping across.

The way to make consistant money in IT is to specialise, but use the general areas such as MCSA, MCSE, CCNA as a foundation to achieve your eventual chosen specialist area.

Ive been DV just before i left the forces and got a cleared job, have six years left! so want to use it or lose it:D

Never quite got a solid cost of how much the process takes. Was told that figure of 40k by a few ex workmates..next to a sandbag..ahem.

Have seen helpdesk to 2nd line jobs, cant remember where, offering a 12 grand security bonus for being cleared so i presume its a lot more than that.

if that is the case the trek down south from one end of the country to the other will be worth it to keep it..do my salary prospects in the future a hell of a boost..

Could of got a job doing the same thing at home but took the hit of heading down south for the sake of the long term goal of not losing the DV. You would lose it if not in a cleared job for over a year.

1 year does seem less, but in reality, its a long time to have such a status, which is not being used.

I can tell you right now, with 100% assurance, that SC clearance costs about 500 quid. ALmost all of those costs are the credit, banking and financial checks. The criminal records and associations check costs nothing.

So the DV costs 40,000 and the SC less that a grand so where does the the bulk of the money go on the higher clearance ? is it worth selling your gran to keep it in the IT world. Or is it aimed at a niche market in the public sector thus squeezing your job choice net taking the shine of its use in the first place?

You scoff, but my TS/SCI clearance cost as much, if not MORE than that.
