    Cheers matey.

There is just chaff all on here in relation to Cisco, so I'm trying to restore the Cisco v Microsoft balance single handed :D

    I'm getting deeper inside OSPF!

    - Learning about Area Border Routers that perform the summarization between two areas.
    - Autonomous System Routing Border which basically connects you to different networks most commonly the internet.
    - Everything must connect back to Area0 which is the backbone
    - All 'areas' must share the same routing topology otherwise the summarization goes a bit 'pete tong'.

Oh and I got my CCENT certificate today, very nice :D

I have just done some changes to the routing scheme of my Lab to create two areas for OSPF.

    - Area 0 being the backbone has four networks
    - Area 1 has seven networks

Router NLR01 is going to be the Area Border Router. The Lab now looks like this:

Will post configs when its all up and running.

Haha, not as lucky as you matey!

I could borrow 4 x PIX's from work, but to be honest I can do pretty much everything on the CCNA level by using Packet Tracer so there seems little point in having a wiring closet in my Study.

If I do decide to go onto the CCNP at some point, I will definatley invest in a nice rig.

Cool mate, packet tracer sounds really good. Right now 3 routers, a switch and 2 firewalls are sitting in our living room. I haven't got round to putting them under the stairs due to my 293 studies. If you don't hear from me, she's killed me  :kar

Just finished studying and rejigged my network diagram slightly with NLR02 being the Area Border Router.

I will load up the details in the morning, but I have to tell you it's looking sexy :biggrin

Can't beat patching into a router with a cisco console cable and having to make changes though. Also I had to change an interface card on a router a while back. Wasnt sure if it was hot swappable or not and it was slightly stressful changing it over as there was a few hundred people getting disconnected when I made the changeover.

Packet Tracer is cool but if you get a few routers etc in the long run it should compliment your studying to be the "Cisco guy" :biggrin

I only do very basic stuff with the Cisco kit and its mostly as a favor but you can't beat getting your baby blue rollover cable out and hooking it up to Hyperterminal. Reminds me of my mainframe days, all rubbish looking and command based ha ha

Know what you mean, always handy having a console cable when starting on a new network as in most cases nobody knows that password for the Cisco kit.

Out comes the console cable.... :biggrin

Ha ha thats funny because the PIX 501 I got free from work, nobody new the password for it so now I've got to go through this whole rigmarole of downloading a file from the Cisco site etc but I haven't had time to try it out. Hope it works! If not I'm coming to you Sparkles

No probs mate, Im no Cisco guru buy I think you can disable the ability to reset the admin password via the console cable but hopefully the guys that setup the PIX were not that paranoid about security. :biggrin

Below is the finished network with OSPF in place. As mentioned, I have changed NLR02 to be the Area Border Router. The only thing I couldn't use was the route range for autosumarization. But if you check out the running configs in my next post, you can see that I have used the sumarization in the wild card mask.

I also changed the Router ID to be 1.1.1.1 for NLR01, 2.2.2.2 for NLR02 etc.
