Hmm, are you able to ping the router from the PC or laptop?

Also when you do ipconfig /all is I.P routing still disabled?

Make 192.168.1.1 the primary DNS on both machines and then repair the connection (right click on the connection and select repair)

    any joy?

Can you post the following part from the Linksys router setup, you also may want to patch both devices into the router just now.

Nice one, can you also post the routing table as well. Click the button at the bottom of the page.

Did you try what I said earlier - open up a run dialog from the lappy and type
    Code:
    \\DESKTOP\C$
    or
    Code:
    \\DESKTOP\D$
If you can connect to the default admin share (and you should be able to) then its definitely a problem with name resolution. If not, then you 'might' have an issue with the TCP/IP stack - although there are probably a load of other things it could be as well.

Also try connecting a CAT-5 cable to the router from one or both of the machines - if you can 'see' each other that indicates a problem with the wireless aspect of the network

Also, since this is a workgroup, you have got identical accounts on the desktop and laptop, right? Same password and everything?

hmmm - definitely nothing wrong with the IP addressing (same subnet, no conflicts etc). Try what I posted above (post #32)

From the screenshot you don’t have any DNS I.Ps defined although when you posted the ipconfig /all there was three DNS I.Ps. Make sure everything is set to automatic in the LAN connection on both machines. Do that and then repair the connections.

As Zeb has pointed out can you patch both machines into the router, this will eliminate any wireless issues.

Edit: Can you also try pinging the I.P of the desktop from the laptop, dont think you have been able to do this so far.

you probably done this but just making sure that you disabled the firewall and other protection software in msconfig and rebooted. For me I had the same issue untill I disabled the firewall and other protection software in msconfig.
