I made a copy of my important documents to a CD-RW disk when I modify a MS Word file from that disk and then try to save it back to the CD-RW I get an error from MS Word saying “File Is Read Only”. Does anyone know how I can edit and save my files back to a CD-RW disk?

What program did you use to write the disk with?

You didn't specify the finalise disk option did you?

I think the problem lies with the nature of CD's in general. When you copy something to CD it makes it read only. You might need to either check the file attributes by right clicking on the document and properties and untick read only box. Then try to copy it to the CD. If not try wiping the original off the CD (Make a backup of the doc first) then saving the modified one to it.

I tried taking off Read Only but I got an error "Access Denied"

I will try your other suggestion and let you know how it goes.

That's the key then! When you finalise a CD it prevents any changes from being made to the CD.

Basically that CD is now stuck with what data is on it. 8)

As Simon says it's because you finalised the CD. You might be able to copy the doc file onto your hard drive then format the CD-RW to it's original state then write it back onto the CD-RW. I'm not sure if finalising a CD-RW makes it unwritable for good.

i think you'll be fine mate by formatting the disc, cd-rw's are basically small hard drive's and don't actually have data "burned" into them, just data imprinted onto the specific dye used on the surface.

    hth! :tongue
