Right, so.. I'm currently building a lab for Linux+ which I'll be starting in a month or two.

My first lab that I built for my early Microsoft exams was Ubuntu with virtualbox installed. The Windows VMs ran great in this environment. Then, starting with Server 2012, I decided to install Server 2012 R2 & run all of the VMs from Hyper-V. Hyper-V was great, so I decided to use this setup again for my Linux+ lab... I've been sitting here for about 4 hours trying to install ubuntu on a Hyper-V VM. It's just running like scheisenheimer.

Are there any incompatibilities that anyone is aware of regarding running Linux VMs on a Windows system? Also, I saw someone mentioning the virtualbox isn't as good as it used to be or something on here a couple of months ago? Is that something I should take into consideration before I wipe the host?

    I found this > https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askpfeplat/2017/03/14/optimizing-linux-performance-on-hyper-v/

^ Has anyone had experience with upgrading LIS for similar reasons to this?

Just bit the bullet and installed Ubuntu as the host. Installation is a lot smoother now.

I certainly wouldn't bother with HyperV. Never had any issues with VirtualBox myself.

Since it moved from Unity to Gnome how are you finding Ubuntu?

Good work setting up a lab for your studies. Does the Linux+ focus on Ubuntu out of interest? I've not studied it but it looks like an interesting certification that would be a useful change from all of the windows based certs

I always found it was distro agnostic, it want's you to have a general understanding, know about all different offerings etc, have a look at the blueprint.

If I would really suggest any Linux cert I would probably advise people do the RHEL RHCSA as that's what I am seeing more in the Enterprise. You can do the LPIC or even the Linux Foundation exam tracks.

I'll be honest. I had to google this, so the answer is 'I don't know'.

I'm actually planning on doing the RHCSA immediately after the linux+. I figure doing a sim only exam adds to the legitimacy of my other certs a bit.

Yeah virtualbox is up & running fine now. I just can't connect my lab machine to the corporate network, so it's difficult getting all the packages and stuff for Ubuntu after a fresh install. I just took it home and did all the downloading from there though in the end.

Lol ok, you may need to get used to the idea of different interfaces, Gnome, KDE, Unity etc.

Yeah. I'm looking forward to it all to be honest. It'll all be completely fresh and new to me.

99% of places using Linux are using it headless, either as a server OS or an embedded OS. I'd forget about X-Windows, Gnome, KDE, Unity etc, pretty pointless stuff to know for most people.

I'm probably just going to follow the Linux+/RHCSA blueprints for now, so if they're in there I'll have to learn them for the exam. But point taken.
