Thanks for all the support guy's.
Just got back from the interview.

There were two people present. A HR manager and the IT manager- both very nice.

Seems like a good company to work for. They invest in their staff and looks like a nice place to work. There are 200 people in the centre where the job is and they have 12 other offices around the UK.
The IT manager asked me some questions which I felt comfortable with most of.
One question he asked was how could I get the public IP address of the company. I said I would have to have access to the default gateway or router, whatever is dealing with the WAN side of things. He said that this wouldn't give me the IP address. I asked if I could access the net to do it, which he said yes. I suggested to use http://www.whatismyipaddress.com/ which he said fine.
I think they are looking someone who is genuinely interested in IT (me) and who is willing to learn (me) :D
They said that the company plans to migrate from 2K to 2K3 after Christmas.
I feel the interview went well and they mentioned if they both agreed I would be asked for a second interview.

    Fingers crossed.

Excellent Boyce - that sounds really positive. Fingers crossed :thumbleft

Wrong ! You should have said:

"As a newly appointed Moderator in CertForums, I will simply log on to the site, view Who's Online and gain the Company IP address that way !!!!"

Hope it works out for you Boyce ...

As for finding out the IP address of the company, surely the PING command would do it?

Eg:- "ping www.certforums.co.uk" in the DOS window

    Or am I wrong?

It depends on whether they host a web site themselves. If the company doesn't have a web site or if their web site is hosted with another company (mine is with Yahoo web services for example), the PING would return the IP address of that. Now if they did host a web site in a DMZ (de-militarised zone) for their own company and they had registered a host record with a DNS service on the Internet it would work but you really couldn't be sure in this instance.

Sorry if that sounds a bit jumbled

Thanks for all your support guy's. :D I will let you know the outcome.
As for the Public Ip address thing I thought that the router or server dealing with the WAN would display the public IP- they do in most SOHO set-ups. :blink

Pete- as for pinging the companies website (if they hosted it in the DMZ) that never crossed my mind, thanks! :thumbleft

In your experience do companies only have one public IP? Or if they had more would that make the DMZ redundant?
My way of thinking is that if you had a web server in a DMZ then everything else is behind a firewall. If you had two IP's then you would have stronger security as there would be no way in at all.

generally if they are using NAT in any form, a DMZ server will return its internal address from an internal ping

you will find it often rare that you can ping your own external addresses from inside the network

your router/firewall/wan device would of been correct, not sure why they said it wouldnt of
*shrugs* provided ofcourse, that its the device performing the NAT

Phoenix- I was confused as well, but as the IT guy there knows a lot more than me I just thought of another answer. :D
So even in a commercial set-up the routers dealing with the WAN side would display the public IP's?
