The network manager at my school is changing the backup software we use. At the moment we use Veritas, which we find OK but can be a bit fiddly to use. Due to the increase in data to backup and the fact that we needed to backup another server, we obviously had to purchase another server licence. The usual scenario that we could not buy a licence for the version we were using and would need to upgrade the whole system at consideral expence. It was decided to change over to a system called Retrospect, as it was cheaper (Site Licence rather than per server licence) and after testing a darn site easier to use.

Anyone any thoughts, what do others use at work and what sort of backup system ie full backups, differential, incremental etc.

We use veritas Backup Exec 9, 1 full weekly backup and differentials the rest of the week. Never used Retrospect only Arcserve and Backup Exec.

We do one full backup over the weekend onto tape. Can last a couple of days depending on whether the network is busy. The rest of the week is an incremental backup onto Network Attached Storage devices. Very good stuff and makes restores very quick.

Any particular reason for using a third party backup application :?:

Having used both Veritas and Arc Server I much prefer Veritas

I use NT Backup when I can (but I like to use what comes out the box)
