Been there and done that twice over.

Long hours, not much chance of holidays. Very stressful financially and on personal relationships.

    No work = no money

    On holiday = no money

I'm not saying don't do it but just go into it with your eyes open and realise what you're committing to.

I've thought about it a fair few times.

When I'm a bit better at... oooh a lot of things I'll look to set up on my own again (service this time, not retail).

But until that day, it's much easier taking the guaranteed PAYE, lovely tax and all lol.

A mate of mine and I had our own business, however we didn't make enough money to give up our full-time jobs (granted it was over 5 years ago, and we only did the local county). We did home networking and home PC repairs. Didn't get too involved with the paperwork (my mate did all of that) though.

I'm thinking of setting up on my own next year. Going to wait and see how I feel after Christmas. I'm big on setting myself a goal for the year, like this year to get my certs.

I used to own a hairdressers (I wasn't a hairdresser by the way). It was fun, made money and I'm good with books. Split with my then fiancee and gave her it because she was a hairdresser. Sa la vie

That's never been done before! You won't have a bit of competition! :p

In all seriousness, if you can do it in your spare time, or if you don't mind the possibility of stretches of little-to-no revenue, you can make it happen.

I've had one or two ideas over the years for websites that I think could be a good idea, not necessarily as an immediate money-spinner, but ones that could become quite popular, especially with everyone jumping on the 'cloud computing' concept.

Having the time to research and implement them properly has always been my issue. If you have a go, keep us posted at how you get on! :)

My first idea was to actually make practice questions for the CompTIA A+ and sell them for like £20 just to see if i could actually get any sales.

 cracked me up this

I'd suggest to you that you'd have to be an expert beyond the A+ level to produce practice papers for any exam. If you get something wrong you could be leading exam takers to their doom . . . . :badi

yep, i have - for all it's downsides i would be prepared to make a go of it.
I work closely with a friend who has been "limited" for three years now and although he is chasing payments when people are watching coronation street, or chasing suppliers when some are having their cornflakes, he does very well out of it. "the system" also seems to be more flexible with self employeed and limited companies. to be frank, he earns a hell of a lot more money than me, although pays not that much more in to "the system".

I've wanted to, but there are way too many legal reasons why I can't. A lot of the rules change at sixteen though (for example you can be a director of a limited company), so roll on September :D

I've thoguht about it, a lot actually, the problem is I'd want money in the bank before I started (something which aint gonna happen on my current paycheck). Maybe in the future, but right now unless someone else came along and said 'heres a huge cash injection to get you started, no need to pay me back' I'm staying working for others! :p

There's a boatload of people creating practice questions and selling them for cheap. Problem is... most of them aren't very good.

    Exactly this.

Dude... from someone who has created practice exam products on and off for the past 8 years, let me tell you... done right, it's a lot harder and more time consuming than you think it is.

But hey, if you want to, knock yourself out! :)

I have a photographic printing company, I can tell you this, you will only get out of it what you put into it,

any normal job you go home and forget about your place of work when you own it you have to think about it 24-7 even when you do get holidays its never far from your mind.

even now as I type this I am also thinking of how best to develope an online service which is user friendly.
