Supa, Bluerinse, Gav, Trip, Tyler, Pete, Harry, and hopefully I haven't forgotten anyone else's name, thanks a lot. The congratulations and the praise makes me feel pretty good. Hope I live up to all of it.

It still doesn't feel real because it's such a shock that I finally got a job, and a pretty decent one at that, that I can hardly believe it. :D

Every light at the end of the tunnel has been another train coming for so long that it's almost hard to believe that some good fortune finally came my way for a change.

    But, WOOHOOO!!! It's about time....

Thanks, Zimbo, d-Faktor, Nugget, and Simon.

LOL. I'm such a workaholic it isn't funny. I woke up at 4:00 this morning with my mind already working on some of the projects I know I'll have. I haven't even started yet and all I can think about is work....

d-Faktor, it's good to see you around again.

There are no Linux secrets. Even the source code is published... :biggrin :biggrin

Yeah, I run Debian. The only "secret" to learning Linux is motivation and determination. I've been using it a little longer than I thought. I found a post of mine the other day on another forum from around the beginning of 2004. But, I've been unemployed this entire time so I've spent many, many hours in reading about it and working with it.

I have probably averaged, over the last year, something like 6 hours a day learning Linux. The first year was spent probably 50/50 with Windows. The 2 1/2 years before that were 100% Windows at around 12 hrs a day. I've kind of just looked at study/learning as a full time job when I haven't been out job hunting. The reason the study hours are down for Linux is because I've been spending 2 days a week out of town job hunting for the past year so that really cuts into the average time spent studying....

The real Linux guru's here are still who they have been all along: Harry and Phoenix. Just because I've gotten a job working with Linux now doesn't mean I've passed these two guys by. They have been using *nix much longer than I have.

To tell the truth I'm kind of in awe of Harry. As a long time developer, yet someone who knows quite a bit about the admin side, he knows *nix systems extremely well. Harry is basically a living encyclopedia the way I see things. His approximate equivalent in Windows is d-Faktor, although d-Faktor isn't a developer.

Er - well I see myself as more at the 'competent' level rather than Guru. If I was a Guru I would be able to write awk and sed scripts without having to look the syntax up all the time! :p

I note you will be dealing with Postgresql. That has to be my favourite RDBMS, I have been running it and developing for it for a few years now.

    Harry.

Congrats on landing a new job! :biggrin

I think your right about Linux giving you an edge in the job market. We have just taken on a support contract at work with Linux servers and as all the current engineers are trained in Windows we basically don’t have a clue what to do with the Linux boxes. We had to hire a Linux specialist and I guess he is on good £££ even though he is only on-site 2 days a week.

Will be interesting to see how much of a market share Linux can take from Windows over the next few years.... 8)

I really think small companies are going to go this way more and more, especially if MS doesn't start really dropping the prices on their enterprise level products. They are so expensive that small startups are immediately priced out of the market for their OS's and database servers.

A small company can afford to pay a tech $5,000 a year more than a Windows tech and still come out way ahead when you realize that 4 copies of SQL Server 2005 Enterprise edition--which you must have for a small cluster like this--is $100,000 by MS's own pricing. Sure, you can buy it cheaper elsewhere, but are you going to buy it for less than 1/2 the price? And then the costs for the Enterprise Edition of Server 2003 hasn't even begun to be figured into the price. When it is they can afford to pay for the Linux people, the time it takes to set Linux up correctly, and still spend far less money.

I really think Linux is going to put a huge hurt on Windows.... It may take longer in the desktop and business network areas but even then I think Linux will really start to grow. When the results start coming back from what cities such as Berlin are doing things will really take off.

A further update on the job situation.

Well, talks about making me a salaried employee are getting serious. I've also been told that I will be supervising the developers we hire. So, it looks like once I have the entire network under control and all forensic work done I'll be focusing on how the programs are integrated into the api's for the system we will be integrating our software into.

Wow. What a learning curve in front of me. What an opportunity and a challenge. Hope I'm not in too far over my head....

The people here certainly seem to trust me is all I can say.... I am going to have to work my butt off to deserve it.
