That's exactly what I'm thinking, beats reading the Myers Book hands down. Once I've mastered this one, I might go for broke and build one from scratch!

I'm so glad it's my own PC and not a "clients" or a company PC, where I've braindumped my way through the A+, got a job and now look a right muppet :D

Everyone in IT is constantly learning. Even Freddie came against something he never saw the other day...

Can you boot into safe mode without it resetting?

Safe mode only loads a basic set of drivers, I doubt it loads any motherboard specific drivers. So hopefully it would be stable and give you a chance to be able to uninstall the old mobo drivers. If you can?

Running a *repair* install would probably help sort it out.

    How long before it resets?

    Are all the fans spinning?

boot up from a bootable CD or floppy and see if it resets.

LOL. Boyce, I hate to blow your image of me, but I run into things I've never seen before all the time: like on a daily basis. I may be grizzled and old, but I'm not a veteran IT guy.

    K_o_N,

What mobo/cpu combo did you have before and what did you upgrade to? If you made too big a jump you may be better off just reinstalling your OS. If you're running XP you'll have to reactivate your OS through MS anyway as I think a mobo and cpu upgrade will require that.

Fred- LOL. It is reasurring for all of us when people as experienced as you come up against bizarre things!

As for the XP activation, yes, everytime i have changed a CPU, mobo or both you get the "box" up.....

Tried to repair install Windows XP but again it keeps resetting ...

It powers up, goes through the POST, detects the FDD, HDD, CD Drive then tries to load up windows when it resets ...

I think retrying the old MoBo and installing the new MoBo driver ...

Day off tomorrow to try everything humanely possible ...

    Freddie, for your info,
I was running an Intel Celeron 2.5Ghz on an Intel IM845GV Mobo

Upgraded the MoBo only to (Elite Group) ECS P4M800-M

Well, just tried a full install of Windows and guess what ...

That's right, the PC is up and running, just as well I backed up my documents a few weeks back as it was :D

Thanks for the help and advice guys ... It's been a good lesson! If anyone needs a MoBo replacing in the Hampshire area, just give me a shout

Next step is to replace the RAM which seems to have been fubar'd in the experience ... 384MB has dropped to 266. That can't be too hard to replace in comparison ...

But tonight, I shall be making friends with Jack Daniels :D :berrr

Good to hear that you treat your computer with such compassion and respect....

I may name mine, but that's about as close as I get to treating them like a person.
