Using XP, how do you add items to the "left" side of the "Start" menu?

Simply drag and drop a Start Menu item or Desktop Shortcut. From the Desktop, if you drag the shortcut to the start button, the menu should open.

Alternatively if you use a program a couple of times it will show up there. That area is used for the most used program shortcuts so the more you use one program the more it rises to the top.

I tried moving Paint from Start/All programs/Accesories to the Start button but it went to the desktop, how can I move Paint back to where it was?

Cut'n'paste it from the Desktop directory to the correct place in the 'Start Menu' tree.

you could always copy the items around: when you drag the item, hold the CTRL button, should see a little icon, that would copy the item instead of moving it...
