    Hey Harry,

its the PC with IPv6 that works so im a little worried about removing it.

Ah - you said "can't" twice in your post - so I had to guess which one was "can"!

At this point you need to be careful. It would appear that someone has been playing with mixing the IP versions.

You need to verify carefully just what IPs are on each machine (ipconfig /all) and what versions of TCP/IP have been installed on each machine.

Rereading the whole thread - as this is intended to work with an ADSL router and on the 'net, I'd be inclined to ditch the IPv6 stuff and use the 'normal' v4 system exclusively.

But you need to check with the owner as to why the v6 was installed.

    IP on connecting PC:10.0.0.12
This PC has both TCP/IP and IPv6 installed

    IP on unconnected PC:10.0.0.3.

This PC only has TCP/IP installed

So probably installed by accident - I'd ditch the v6 stuff - it will only confuse!

The PC upstairs that is working correctly can see the other PC upstairs but not the other way around.

    Good - one less confusion!

Now - assuming that the unconnected pc is still unconnected - can you ping the other two machines from the 'unconnected' one?

If you can then bring up the 'run' box and type the name of the machine with the printer, preceeded by double back-slashes (eg \\thing ) and press return.

It *should* then give you an explore box with the printer visible.

i can ping the downstair PC, not the working one upstair.

Even although i can ping the PC downstair i cant access it via
    START/RUN :\\donald

\\donald is what im using on the working PC and that shows up downstairs files no probs.

On the non-connecting PC make sure that "Client for Microsoft Networks" is ticked in network properties.

Its ticked Harry, when trying to access the problem PC via the Run \\lynn it says i dont have permision, do you think the settings for permision may be wrong.

I have allowed sharing by right clicking C:. File and print sharing is allowed also.

Hm - if 'lynn' is the upstairs machine that won't connect - does it have anything shared?

I think we also now need to know which version of Windows these three machines have.

I'm about to go catch a train - so won't be available for about 90 mins or so - I hope someone else can pick up the ball!

    sp2? any firewalls active?

    so resuming:
you can ping but you cannot access \\downstairs from upstairs-print-not-ok.
you can ping and you can access \\downstairs from upstairs-print-ok.
and vice versa, you cannot access \\upstairs-print-not-ok from another pc.

    is that about correct?
