Monks run short of 'world's best' beer

Monks at a Belgian abbey have run out of their famous beer after it was voted the best in the world.

The abbey of Saint Sixtus of Westvleteren in western Belgium is home to about 30 Cistercian and Trappist monks who lead a life of seclusion, prayer, manual labour and beer-brewing.

A survey of thousands of beer enthusiasts from 65 countries on the RateBeer website in June rated the Westvleteren 12 beer as the world's best.

But the abbey only has a limited brewing capacity and was not able to cope with the beer's sudden popularity.

"Our shop is closed because all our beer has been sold out," said a message on the abbey's answering machine, which it calls the "beer phone".

The abbey has no intention of boosting its capacity to satisfy market demand.

"We are not brewers, we are monks," the father abbot said on the abbey's website. "We brew beer to be able to afford being monks."

Monk Mark Bode told De Morgen newspaper: "Outsiders don't understand why we are not raising production but for us life in the abbey comes first, not the brewery."

I'm not so sure this a "sad" day for Belgium. Here's a group of people who said they have priorities that they place over and above that of making money. I say, More power to them. They have their priorities in the right place.

Actually, that was a joke. Around CF, anytime anyone runs out of beer, somebody holds a wake. :biggrin

I wasn't trying to comment on the monk's lifestyle at all.

Don't even JOKE about that, Trip !!! :dry

Interestingly, the Buckfast Monks over here produce a tonic wine that is somewhat popular amongst the more junior ranks of adolescent society in the West of Scotland, to such an extent that I swear there is not a licenced grocer in the country that would not have plenty in stock, for fear that the young reprobates would trash the joint (it is known to happen).

Or to put it another way, if ye've nae buckie, ye'll get tanned aff the Neds !!!!

So whilst the Belgian Monks may be using their brewery for their survival, I'm not so sure this applies across the ecumenical board.

    IMHO:D

I think "if ye've nae buckie" means "If you don't have any Buckfast Monks" but I can only assume "ye'll get tanned aff the Neds" is some sort of violent threat. :blink :tongue
