nothing is new about this, ADSL can handle higher than this anyway
    its 39.99 a month but 33:1 contention!!!!!

im looking to move to a Bulldot @ctive packages
4MB down, 400kb up, phone line (no need for BT one), free calls to bulldog users etc, 40 quid a month!
apparantly, service is still in testing but they have already started to advertise

Like a million other Australian homes ours can't get ADSL :( So threads like this one really make me feel disadvantaged.

It is not because I am too far away from the exachange nor is it that the exchange is not ADSL enabled because it is SDLAM'ed up with available port as well. The problem for most of us is that Telstra (our main Telco) have been installing RIMs (Remote Integrated Multiplexers). These roadside green boxes are connected to the the exachange by fibre, which is good and in turn the houses are connected to them by copper. However, these RIMs are a pair gain technology and as such prohibit ADSL unless they have been modified with a CMUX otherwise known as a Minimux. We have been waiting three years for ours to be upgraded and we believe it may happen in May this year. The last date for modification was November 2004 but that has been and gone

Because of the RIM and it's pair gain limitations, I can only ever achieve a 28K dial up

ISDN is possible but it costs a fortune here in comparison to ADSL.

Wireless, like the iBurst systems are only just starting to arrive on the Gold Coast but having spoken with multiple ISPs and having been part of the Broadening Broadband Project with The Gold Coast City Council, I don't hold out much hope because of the terrain where we live. We live in the middle of a forrest, which is surrounded by hills and mountains.

I want ADSL so bad it hurts :offtopic

good description can be had over at ADSL Guide
gets to the point re ADSL contention
and although BT make sure you wont drop to your contended level, you still drop quite a bit at busy times, and they are under no obligation to keep your service above its contended value, lame huh :)
33:1 is indeed less than the 50:1 BT provide, but im guessing with 8mb they will be a lot more willing to let service slip than with 512k (they pay for bandwidth remember)

And how much does this all costs, gang? You want it...you'll have to pay for it (and I admit, I didn't review the thread so if money was mentioned, I missed it). :biggrin

the 8MB in the UK is 39.99 (about 80 USD, only slightly more than what we currently pay for 1MB)
the 100mb and 1000mb in hong kong is equally comparatitive
as is the 20MB in Europe (about 39.99 Euros, so LESS than 80 USD) (i think)
