i think it has 64MB of ram and i just put in a 10GB HD- you see i cant find the exact type of memory to put more in and i got other memory just sitting here but i dont want to fry the machine!

I don't think you'll cause any damage to the PC if there's a RAM mismatch. At worst, it just wouldn't boot, or may just not pick up all the sticks.

However do not take that as gospel. Hopefullyl Ryan will swing by this thread, as I remember a while back he posted some useful info on this issue - as I recall, there is a scenarion where wrong RAM may cause damage, but I dont think it was what sounds like the kinda bog-standard older RAM we're talking about here.

Now where's Mr Phoenix when you need him ....:)

ummm i think i may have found the right memory but im not sure... in the pc i got 64MB - two slots are occupied so surely each slot gets 32MB... now in one slot there are modules on both sides on the card infact 8... NOW i found a memory card with exact same amount of pins...it has 8 modules but on only one side.... is this fine???

Is this SIMMS or DIMMS we're talking about here ?

ahhh... the ones inside must be DIMMs and i want to put SIMMs ... confirm if they have modules on both sides they DIMMS?

I think SIMMS are all double-sided. DIMMS can be either.

as a HP Vectra at 200mhz its likely to be a VL 5/xxx Series 4 or 5 PC

both seemed to use EDO memory (which is why they are in pairs of 32, matching pairs are required)

they should be 72 pins with a notch dead center, however as far as i recall there should only be memory modules on one side (8 modules for 32mb sticks)
    4mb * 8 = 32mb

    should look somehting like this
    http://www.crucial.com/crucial/pvtcontent/memorytype.asp?memtype=72-pinSIMM

dont go plugging random memory in, best case scenario is nothing happens, but it doesnt boot
worst is you fry the memory, or the motherboard! memory requires electricity, drawing too much can screw the mobo, requiring too little can kill the memory

these older systems dont have the capacitors and voltage regulators to keep an eye on things either

im going to try boot the PC cause maybe im wrong with the memory size... but its def modules are on both sides of the card and there are two cards with memory on both sides.... so what type of memory can i buy EDO what?? you mind making some recommendations from ebay.co.uk? cause im really in need of getting this pc up and going soon

    thanx if you can

well the board on a vectra VL 5/xxx series 4 or 5 is limited to 128mb of ram, meaning you can put another matched pair of 2x 32mb anyway, thats your max, which will be a push with xp, but it will meet the minimum requirement (64 is minium, but any shared video memory causes that limit to be unreachable)

crucial sell the memory for 39.99 usd per piece, and u need 2, so thats 40quid ish, but ebay may have some bargins, be careful trusting memory from ebay though :)

:cheers yeah but what is the PC's role in the network.. if speed is not much of a factor im not going through the hassle of finding memory for it... i got my other PC for server 2003 (700MHZ 128RAM) and this one is was told was for XP but whats it going to be doing?

If your following labs from your study books, then they will tell you exactly what to do with your clients and servers. As long as you have the boxes, then you just do what the books tells you. :)

Nope. In a study scenario, time won't be a factor. As long as the client completes the objectives, then so have you :)

Have you tried connecting it to the network yet Zimbo ? Gotta get that buzz when you "see" your first network share :)
