My Mam's cousin wanted me to show him how to change his desktop background picture. Piece of cake I thought except that there is a problem I can't fix. I can change the picture no problem but in the Display icon you access via Control Panel there are only 3 tabs, not 5. The 2 missing are Screen Saver and Desktop. Can anyone tell me why these are missing and if I can get them back, how? He uses XP Home Edition.

    Thanks

I found a few articles on the problem you are experiencing. Here are the two links:

    http://www.techsupportforum.com/microsoft-support/windows-xp-support/225477-desktop-tab-missing-display-properties.html

    http://windowsitpro.com/article/articleid/93089/the-desktop-tab-is-missing-from-the-display-properties-in-windows-xp.html

Hope that helps. Others suggest that it could be infected with viruses and all kinds of ad-aware, etc. Have you done a scan to make sure that it's not a virus or something?

Try a virus scan before doing anything with the registry like the prof says, that can only lead to bigger problems.

actually, more importantly, back up the registry before making changes

    Grant,

Was the Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition operating system pre-loaded on the computer by an Original Equipment Manufacturer?

I don't think local group policy is available in XP home.
