What do people know/ think windows 7? I have seen quite alot of screen shots and read about it a fair bit.
It sounds very interesting, but will it be as good as it sounds?

That's the big question though, isn't it?

I particularly like some of the additional features as listed here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_7#Features

But we'll have to wait and see eh? :p

It does sound cool, but hey apparently beta versions are being handed out, at the PDC 08 conference in LA late on this month, so i guess that beta version will be available on the connect website soon after.

I hate that microsoft always seems to back out of promises

We were promised a near on full kernel rewrite, micro kernel etc etc in win 7 now it looks like it will be a vista patch up job.

When Longhorn was fist been talked about Microsoft was on about some new object based filing system that sounded so cool and revolutionary (actually the idea goes back to Cairo NT 4) , then they went back to winfs (a sql, database, ntfs mashup I presume like the cancelled RFS w/ SQL2000), then winfs was apparently behind in development and they said it would be released later as a vista service pack .. sp 1 has come and gone still no winfs

I haven't even seen it been mentioned in windows 7.

NTFS is showing its age now when compared with modern filing systems.

I do not expect anything great, as been said just "Windows 7 = Vista Improved"
The time will come when Microsoft will sunk completely.
Linux are better and better and easy to use. That compete very strong with Windows OS's.

I am looking forward to see what Windows 7 will be like, I just hope it isn't one of those where you have to have Vista to upgrade to it.

I have used linux didn't think much of it tbh, now Unix that's a whole different ball game. Unfortunately/fortunatley (depending on how you look at it) Microsoft will be the dominate force for years & years. The way I see it, I think I'll be retired before anyone really threatens them.

    Errr....

Aren't Google threatening them, MSN search anyone ?

Mozilla threatening them, Firefox beats IE any day.

Linux threatening in the server and desktop space.

    Apache better than IIS.

Salesforce.com, yet to hear of anyone using Dynamics CRM.

WinFS ? Loads of new and experimental filesystems for linux.

Sure Microsoft have a lot of good products, massive market share, lots of supplier agreements, but they don't have everything their own way.

I was meaning the dominance part, yep you can get some PCs that have linux on instead of Windows and OSX obviously but I think it'l be a long time before Microsofts hold of the OS market will be seriously threatened.

Yes.Windows is not gonna go away. Not that easy.
Windows (very often) does not do things as we wish but most of us depend of it.
So at the end I am looking forward for the Windows7.

I know it's going to actually be called Windows 7. That's about it though.

They should have come up with a more 'diverse' name, something avant gard. Here's a few choice names I came up with in about 5 seconds that are all infinitely better than 'Windows 7':

    1. Windows Lima Beans
    2. Windows Gall Bladder
    3. Windows Umbrella
    4. Windows Xylophone
    5. Windows Balsamic Vinagrette
    6. Windows Carvery
    7. Windows Fly Fishing
    8. Windows Diaphragm
    9. Windows Rowing Boat
    10. Windows PUB is an Acronym for Phillip's Uncle's Boat
    11. Windows Vas Deferens
    12. Windows Prophilactics
    13. Windows Lysergicaciddiethylamidetartrate

All of the above I think are streets ahead of just plain old 'Windows 7'.

I agree, I have seen some components that were demoed, i haven't seen any mention of them since.

nor have my sources from within

theres not much out there like winfs, the object based filing system would kick ass shame the project was cancelled.
But yes sun's zfs seems to be one of the most exciting at the moment even apple is ssssslowly supporting it.

PS i would like to see a full proper windows port of FUSE Virtual FS's are cool
