Ok so this week is really starting to get on my Moobs!

There's only 2 of us in the office, both with roughly the same length of time in the company etc. But the other guy has decided, as the manager is not in nor the 2nd in command, that that makes him the boss.

Now i wouldnt mind too much, If it had been offically said that he's in charge, but he just decided as he's been there 3 month longer than me, and i'm support he's configuration, it automatically means he's in charge. thing is, its gone to his head. Almost every hour or so he drops so sort of comment about being in charge or being my boss. he keeps asking me if i've dealt with this or that problem, replied to the emails taht have come in in th elast 10 mins, or if i have anything to do. No our normal manager dosent even do this, he just lets us get on with our work, unless something really needs chasing.
in my own way so far i've dealt with it. i've held my tongue for awhile. batted some insults back and forth in a jockular fashion and bitched to everyone else, but enoughs enough.

I'm finding this guy getting big headed, arrogant and power crazed it seems. No i'm so sick of it, i'm thinking of making an offical complaint to higher up, though the 2nd in command is back this week. So shoul di make a complaint or just keep stchum?

    A few options here:

    1) take him to one side where there is no 1 around and ask what his game is and gently remind him he is no where near your superior.. 8)

    2) Play him at his on game and declare that your the boss for the remainding time and constantly drop email and calls every 5 minutes asking if he has done this or that and come up with some grand schemes :dry

    3) Ignore him totally... eventually this will drive him up the wall :dry

    4) smile and nod your head... while imagining him dangling of the roof of the building by his balls

But seriously dont let him get to you, the seniors will return the status Quo :D

    I like number 4.

If this is just for today, you can probably safely nod, smile, and otherwise ignore the bugger. Hopefully, you have a good relationship with the real bosses. When they get back, you might want to flag them about this so they can plan a contingency for the next time this situation occurs. All they really have to say is that when they're gone, no one is the boss and you both are trusted to behave like adults and just do your jobs.

The problem with waiting for my manager to get back is that he's not much of a manager. he hates conflicts and tried to avoid it. So this is one of those situations he'd try to dodge.

And i've already imagined him buried in a filing cabinet out back, a drawer for each limb!

As for talking to him and telling him he's not my boss, i know taht wont work as, as far as he's concerend he is and thats that.

I think it will be going higher up tomorrow as i know this will happen again in the future if i dont do something now. We had a clash at the end of last year and i got called into the office by higher up, even though niether of us had said anything. Its just that higher up had heard what had been going on and wanted to see if i would make anything off it. I shrugged it off then, but think this time something needs doing.

right now wheres me saw, and how much blood does losing a limb leave on the floor???

Perhaps be the naughty employee - you haven't done any work, you haven't answered the phone, someone did phone for him but you forgot to take the message, basically everything you can for him to flex his "manager" muscle.

What's he going to do? Moan at you, laugh back at him - he can't do anything to you at the end of the day. If he mentions it to your real boss, and as he doesn't want confrontation he'll ignore it or mention it to you quietly - at that point you can turn around and say "everything is fine, work got done, both had an enjoyable joke with each other".

sounds like he is trying to push all the work off on you. I just tell him that I am sorry your self worth is so small that you must act like to this to feel important. Then get one of the higher ups to get him back inline. You don't want him jepordizing your job by pushing you to breaking point.

Some people are just not cut out for management, this guy sounds like one of those people even if he was ‘officially’ your manager.

I know its annoying but just try and ignore it or just answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to his questions. He will eventually get bored!

And make sure you get him from behind. So the hair will hide the lump and he does't actually see you did it.

Honestly this kind of stuff never happens to me and thank god it doesn't. In your spot I would just lay it out straight in front of his face, no interruptions what so ever from him, explain what needs to be explained and if he doesn't listen even though you're serious just go right up to higher managent and explain the situation. To be quite honest I would go up to the management right away I wouldn't even waste a second. Right then and there it would be resolved, no procrastination nothing. Next time he tries to pull a quick one on you, he'll think twice.

Holy Moses, is this guy Gareth from The Office or something?

God forbid if this guy ever did get any real taste of managerial power, from what you've been saying

If this guy is insisiting he is the boss, go to him with a managerial probalem that you know he can't solve. Say you have a major dispute on your hands, or tell him you haven't got paid on time, something like that, and watch the sod flounder :D

Seriously, if it keeps on, rather than making a complaint, I would just ask the powers-that-be if not only is this guy in charge by any stretch of the imagination, and if so is there any official notice of this. They will soon say no, and then probably contact him and ask him what the hell he is playing at.

    Hah, bang on there pal

You know, I must admit, when it was first revealed a US version was going to be made, I had very little hopes for it, bit I think the US Office is excellent. Steve Carell does an top job in it.
