What route to take?

Hello.
I'm planning on working through the CIW exams but am confused by which route to take.
It seems I initially have two options, take the 3 exams - 1D0-51A, 1D0-51B, 1D0-51C & then
be awarded the CIW Web Foundations Associate qualification or the one exam 1D0-510.
Is this correct and if so any advice on which is the better option?

After that I intend to work through the rest of here exams so am likely to be here a lot.
I can currently write a web page in html/xhtml & css and have done a couple of sites for friends
but am looking now to turn it into a career.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not really looked into the CIW certs, but I believe the best route to get into web devolpment is to have a portfolio of sites that you have done, so you can show potential employers.
