Don't know if I am missing out of something here. Haven't got any IM client, so I had to post this way as Si didn't put that option up to vote.

Wow. And I thought I'd be the only one who doesn't use IM. Of course, the first time I'd ever used a chat room was the one here. I don't even know how IM works. If you want to IM someone, it seems you both have to be using the same IM client. If they are on IM when you're trying to message them, what happens? Do you have to prearrange a time to both be on? If so, how's that superior to e-mail when it doesn't matter if they're on or off? Is IM then sort of like "private chat"?

Its a little like a private chatroom Trip. I find it useful when trying to communicate something that needs a little more than possible in an email such as a technical query. When I'm at home I normally leave myself signed in and if anyone thats in my contacts signs in I'm notified and I can send them a hello if I like.

IM's run in the back ground and can show you if anyone in your contacts list is online, if they are you can IM them and a noticication shows on your taskbar, if you click on it, it will open your IM client and you just start chating to one another.

They're a bit like mobile phones, in that:

They are used an awful lot for people to talk about absolutely nothing very useful.

Not for us techs though, oh no, we only use them for technical stuff 8)

When Nelix helped me fix my laptop for example, the IM was invaluable.

They seem to imply an "always on" internet connection. True? If so, no dial-ups allows.

Dialup is allowed, I used to use MSN when I had a 56K dailup, It just means that the IM client can only be used when connected to the internet.

I use MSN both at home and at work. For the latter, it's incredibly useful if you hear someone on another call that needs some detail you may have, you send it live (and vice versa).

However, I have just freaked a bit, as I've just signed in at home, and I show up as signed in at work....Ex-squeeze me, but the last thing I did was shut down my machine ?!?!?

D@mn late-shift Guys  I expect my display will be set upside down when I go in tomorrow

Yeah, I voted for msn messenger. Then I went back to vote for yahoo, but it said that I had already voted.
However, I have near exactly the same amount of contacts on yahoo as I do on msn, so the one option isn't reflecting this fact.

:soz but I have to make this point. The question really should be:
"which IM client do you prefer"

as this question is pertaining to a vote, which is an act of representing your preference for one thing over another.

The way the question says "use" will mean that more than one result can be attained.

I've voted for trillian, I liked it so much I purchased the pro version, I love it when a new news item pops up on the screen.

Used the non pro version for a couple of years.
