The purpose of this thread, is for people to post what they did at work yesterday along with what line of support they are, e.g. 1st, 2nd or 3rd Line. Hopefully, will give some understanding to new members, or people who are seeking a promotion, what to expect. I'll start by showing what I did yesterday.

    Third Line Support

    - Discussed a clients current share permissions and then reconfigured these on a file server.
    - Imported a customer Group Policy into Server 2003 to disable USB devices and applied to domain.
    - Configured Exchange 2007 to not send Read Reciepts exernally.
    - Used ADM Template for Office 2007 to apply a Group Policy on Server 2008 to turn off Read Reciepts in Outlook 2007.
    - Removed MX blacklistings for a customer on various top level servers. Informed the customer to route SMTP traffic via a Smart Host and informed them we would qoute on this.
    - Added several Send As rights to various users accounts.
    - Tried to install a crappy HP Laserjet P2015 with no CD remotely and failed miserably (would be nice if HP included all the files to install from website).
    - Brought up a down Site to Site Tunnel.
    - Looked at several slow PC issues.

A few things I did yesterday:

    1. Sorted out a DNS issue
    2. Applied several patches to our MIS system
    3. Domain & forest prep'd our AD for Exchange 2010 & tried to installed (still trying to sort out issues)
    4. Ordered several things that we need

There were other things also, small jobs, for staff...

I'm 1st, 2nd and 3rd line at the same time (small business)

    Yesterday:
    - Deployed network scanner/printer
    - Migrated few more workstations to a new domain
    - MySQL database server maintenance work
    - Fighting with legacy application (Window Designer) to find a way to run it without user being Power User on a workstation (failed)

In spare time I'm developing/improving company's php intranet applications

BTW craigie: I have installed 2 P2015's remotely lately on Win Server 2008 x64 and Win XP 32bit without any bigger issues really (no cd as well)

    1st, 2nd & 3rd Line(gotta love being the only support tech...)

    • Finished build and config of the MDs new pc (nice big fat stress test coming up today cos its a new spec)
    • Replaced faulty graphics drivers on a box for deployment today
    • Found out that a couple of machines have got failing HDDs, waiting for sign off on parts for one and replacing the other.
    • Talked about\investigated option for next years budget (going for double this years having come in massively under budget)
    • Studied for my N+
    • Answered various user queries which reveal the need to double our training budget for next year...

Fairly light day planned today, got some niggling issues to sort out, including a dodgy PCL6 driver on one of our printers. Going to spend some time putting together a plan for rolling out some new kit across the company.

1st/2nd/3rd Line Support Another small company- mainly email/web hosting but the work varies ;)

    • Replaced a power supply after we had a power surge (before I started work)
    • Created a web page for a new email marketing service we're offering.
    • Created two sitemap's for our sister website and generated a .htaccess file to redirect some pages.
    • Sent back a faulty Seagate drive from a RAID array.
    • Added finishing touches to a website being built for a client- they seemed to like it :p
    • Finally finished installing a network printer that had been giving me trouble for the last 2 weeks

Mate, I downloaded the PLC6, PLC5 and Universal Drivers and tried all of 'em, this was installing onto a local PC to be shared out. When installing it was asking for a file which was not present. Most likely either its a different Printer Model, so needless to say, I have sent an engineer to site.

    • Started to roll-out new PCs to users who require a higher spec to run some new in-house software
    • Altered an existing GPO to change the location of the WSUS server
    • Finally got confirmation for a start date for my new systems admin role (which is two weeks after handing in my current notice!)
    • Browsed the net a bit...?

    Yeah, I think I'm done.

Maybe it's one of them 2015N, 2015P or something like that. I've seen different drivers for them. Other than that, I'm glad you have someone to send to a site to sort it out :D

Location had 4 routers bridged and one kept dropping and disconnecting our vpn sessions

    • Pre Meeting
    • Meeting
    • Post meeting
    • Answer question from attendees of above meetings due to them not listening properly

Left home and went straight to a client to replace an SDSL router and install an i-boot (which is an awesome idea device btw).

Arrived back to base for dinner. Cleared up some calls, then out to another client to migrate their sbs network over to NOD32

We don't have 1st,2nd,3rd line support type roles... It's Network admin and desktop support and since the network guy is gone for 5 weeks, I am taking over. Here's what I've done so far:

    - Setup a new ESXi server for a remote office
    - Install a new version of Telephone API application on a test server and prepare for Prod.
    - Troubleshoot some Citrix issues
    - Couple of modifications to Exchange 2003 for internal email delivery
    - Preped a new ghost image for the new workstations I am deploying
    - Troubleshooted workstations
    - Toner calls
    - Setup Backup jobs in Backup Exec

    That's about it.
