We've had "What did you do before you worked in IT?"...

Now how about "what would you do if you didn't have to work in IT?"

No matter what the scenario - if money were no object in the career of your choice, what would you do? Would you still slug yourself through server migrations in the antisocial hours of the morning? Would you still take idiotic abuse from the service end of a helpdesk phone?

Basically - what's your dream job?

Whilst I have toyed around with the idea of retraining to specialise in IT law, that's not a dream job, that's just a job that's guaranteed to pay a hell of a lot of money when I'm finally qualified.

No no no. The dream job is writing fantasy fiction, if some of you had managed to avoid the "Graces of Faded Angels" thread.

So how about yourselves? Does daydreaming about excavating ruins in the Sahara distract you from the everyday mundanity (not a word, but is now!) of your job? Is there something else you would like to aspire to? For those of you that do something else altogether, or as a hobby, how does that link in with your passion to pursue IT?

Or do you see jobs on the whole as a means to an end, and you can't wait to retire so you can sit on a beach somewhere and watch the rest of the world take the slack for a while?

Personally I think creative English is great. I have so many euphemisms for "turn it off and on again" that it's almost untrue :)

Err ... I think you'll find Arroryn is asking what you would like to do as your Dream Job, not your current part time job! :tongue:wink::twisted: LOL

    Seriouly? Working in IT.

Thats my answer. Probably Consultancy or Design not sure to be honest- but it would be in IT. Regardless, of the £££'s earned from keeping my pimp hand strong, it still will be in IT, as the love is stronger.

I think you have a good point there, do we do IT for the money??? No! ( I hope I hear some of you say!) we do it because we love it!

I would like to go more in the direction of setting up a company to do security for business and banks! Sort of CEH but better!

Aren't they just! Unfortunately not...though we are taking on more bigger jobs around the home.
We fully gutted, then plummed and tiled our previous bathroom, installed the suite...put laminate flooring down (though that's easy) and recently tiled our kitchen floor in a professional manner (layed it all out first then cut the tiles so that they were of equal size around the edges etc etc) I love general decorating too - I painted the majority of our house since we moved in in Feb...and we have done a bit of landscaping (cutting borders and laying stones etc) around the garden.

Would love to have the opportunity to go more advanced...and make money out of it! :D

Professional hockey player. If I'd been born in Canada then maybe... ah who am i kiding - the only player that's made it in the NHL in the last thirty years around my size is Theo Fleury... and I'm not THAT nuts :)

Seriously - if money was no object I'd work with big cats.

    Dream job? Photographer.

I only do I.T. for the money right now - the love left the building years ago. If there was someone else competent fixing computers where I live I could hang up my hat. As things sit, I'm the only person within several hundred kilometres with the training. So the locals pressed me into service.

I love what I've done, and I love what I'm doing. That said, I'd love to do nothing but play PC games all day and make money doing it. The second part is the difficult part. :D

I think any job where I have to learn and troubleshoot and analyze data or processes is an enjoyable job for me. In the past, this has always held true - intelligence analyst, operations analyst, chemist, tech, writer. I'm sure there are plenty of other opportunities that remain in my future. :)

Dream job? Probably some sort of full-time writer's gig. Maybe a world famous novelist who only has to write when he wants to and can set his own schedule. That way, I could write when I wanted and then do other things as well, such as travel, study, perhaps take another degree. I'd really like the opportunity to study the Bible in more depth than I have time for now. As Tevye said in the film/stage musical "Fiddler on the Roof", studying the scriptures 7 hours with the learned men every day would be the sweetest thing I know.

    1. Pro Baseball Player -- at one point in my life, albeit a long time ago, I had the talent...
    2. Guitar Player -- it's been over 20 years, still haven't made it.
    3. Pro Bass Fisherman -- yeah, believe it or not, you can make serious cash in the US fishing.

However, given the three above, I'm sure they'd get tiresome after a while. What I crave, what I've been craving for years, is creativity. I've done nothing but make a living fixing other people's problems in a technical capacity, and I'm soooo over it. Sure, there's a certain gratification, but I've never been able to use that 'other' side of my brain full time. Strange?

I guess there were several options:

    1. Full time Martial Arts instructor (had my own club a few years ago, but had to stop both my training and the club due to other commitments).
    2. Nurse - I was working towards my NVQ 3 in Care, plus I had already passed my UKCC DC Test.
    3. Electrical Engineering - that was the alternative route in 1995/1996, but a mate got me onto an entry level IT course.
