Well, after not doing an exam since I did my Network+ last July I decided that it was about time that I did another.

With work willing to pay for CompTIA exams I decided last week to give the Server+ a shot.

This exam was harder than I was expecting, but the important thing is that I passed! :biggrin

I used the Exam Cram Server+ book and the measureup CD that came with it and scored in the 90's on the three tests that it came with. The real thing was much harder than the book or CD.

If you're considering this one make sure that you know your server hardware, especially SCSI. Additionally I suggest that you know SNMP.

    :biggrin

Good job Si (just like Sunderland FC). :thumbleft

Anyway, I had thought about this a couple of years ago and bought the Bigelow book, but one look at its contents and I was not sure whether it was of any benefit.

Can you expand on it a little. I know the A+, N+ and Security+ are the main ones that employers look for and that they give you the knowledge to do you r job, but is Server+ any good in that respect? I mean if you are working with Servers for a number of years and have one at home (like me with a DL580 - horrendously noisy), would you really need this cert?

My DL 580 is a noisy beast with 4 x Xeon processors, 2GB RAM and 4 x SCSI discs that I configured as RAID 5 runn ing SBS.

The way I would look at Server+ is that it's A+ on steroids. You know that you usually start on desktops and desktop support, this is what the A+ prepares you for, like the next step in your career from desktops to servers the Server+ moves things on.

Basically it just proves that you know about servers and how they work.

well, there's an opportunity in work for me to migrate to server support (build, configure, maintain) but I have limited knowledge of server software, but a good knowledge of hardware so maybe this cert might be the next best option for me prior to the vendor-centric stuff from Microsoft. Server 2003 and SBS are the predominant environments in our customer base (no surprise there then!) which is making me think an MS cert would suit me better, but I do feel I'd be trying to run before I can crawl. I dunno! Advice is my best bet here guys n gals so let's 'ave it..
