    Hi all,
I'm sure that I am in a similar situation to a lot of newbies, therefore I won't bore you with much detail. I am an Addistions Nurse Specialist, frustrated with all the bureaucracy and oppressive practice in my field of work, therefore I thought I'd explore my options. Its kinda hard thinking of a career change at this point though, considering the 20k+ drop in salary I'll have to take to start in IT. I'd say that I'm sitting on the fence, waiting for:
(a). The fence to collapse, or
(b). The grass to start looking greener (don't think my colour blindness helps...)

Talking about colour deficiencies, does anyone know whether this precludes me from entering/limits what I can do in IT?

    Thanks!
    Kunal.

I think you have to do what makes you happy. What good is the money if you are miserable everyday?

That's exactly why I am where I am now. I'm not sure whether I am still happy after 10 years in the health sector.

Happiness is a function of wealth.

I didn't always feel this way though, but life has a way of kicking you in the teeth.

    I like your demeanour.

I'm not aware of any reason that colour blind persons can't get into the IT field. I mean, are you required to put it on your CV? Do you need to alter display settings to enable you to see what's on the screen properly? If no, then I can't see anything stopping you.

    Welcome to the forum. :)

Depends on the type of colour blindness. One limitation could be with regards to distinguishing different coloured cables when networking for instance.

If happiness were indeed a function of wealth, then there wouldn't be poor, happy people or rich, sad people... of which I know many in both categories.

Yes, go to any homeless shelter and you'll see people dancing with joy. And I'm sure those execs who drove AIG into the ground are very depressed about the million dollar bonus they got.

I stand corrected by His Royal Hiney, again.

You won't stay at that low salary level forever in IT... I don't know what the salary ranges for nurses are, but I would guess that the potential salary in IT is equal to or better than what you would make as a nurse. If you can survive on less, and you're truly unhappy doing what you're doing, I'd recommend the switch.

Welcome to CF - Having been there, I would rather be happy at work for less money than unhappy for alot more.

Money isn't everything-If you are truly happy doing something, then you will do it well and the rewards will come.

    Welcome to CF :biggrin

If you can get a job picking up garbage for a million a year, take it. You'll be extremely happy, I guarantee it.

    Oh, and welcome to CF.

Do what makes you happy. I do IT along with my real job duties,2 years ago it was just my job using a pc every once in a while I was also earning 4k more.

Was the money nice? yes. Did I look forward to work the next day? no.

    but I do now :)

Thank you all for your posts. Looks like I'm gonna have some interesting conversations with people!
I am thinking of maybe reducing my nursing hours to 3 days a week and finding an entry level IT job for the other 2 after completing my A+ just to get some hands on experience. Nursing can pay well-even better if you're agency-around £30 ph, but then again it comes back to how happy and fulfilling your work makes you feel.
