There is a lack of clarity in which protocols authenicate, encrypt and can be used as server to server or client to client communication in the books I am using.
    Here is what i get:
    PPTP
Provides authentication and encryption between two endpoints.
    Authentication uses MS-CHAP,CHAP,PAP<EAP
    No idea how it encrypts
    Layer 2 protocol

    PPPoE
    No encryption (no idea why)
    Authenticates ???

    L2TP
2 phase authentication: Computer then user
    No encryption - uses IPSEC???

    IPSEC
    TCP/IP Protocol - Layer 3
Authenticates and encrypts using Authentication Header and Encapsulating Security Payload ensuring data verification and integrity.

Please feel free to add as without knowing the whole picture this is not sticking in my head.....

    Cheers,

PPTP can use MPPE to encrypt its contents when using MSCHAP and EAP.

PPPoE is, I think, layer 2, so is a method of moving packets..... (off the top of my head).
