For those that currently hold an MCSA or MCSE certification can upgrade their credential to either an MCITP Server Administrator or Enterprise Administrator.

If you're upgrading from MCSA 2003 to MCITP:SA or EA, you will need to sit the 70-648 exam, that exam is made up of 70-640 and 70-642.

If you're upgrading from MCSE 2003 to MCITP:SA or EA, you will need to sit the 70-649 exam which is made up of 70-640, 70-642, and 70-643.

In terms of study materials, you can use the 70-640, 70-642, and 70-643 books to study for 70-648 and 70-649.

Update: To update everyone that is currently working on upgrading their Windows 2003 certs to 2008/2012 should look at this thread since the MCITP certification is expiring next year in July.

I want to be clear on this before I move forward in upgrading my MCSA:Security to a MCITP:SA. Do I need to take 70-646 AND 70-648? Or can I just take the 70-646 (70-640, 70-642)?
What reading sources do you recommend in perparing for the exams? I looked at the SYBEX books while they are great books they appear to be a few years out of date.

    Thanks

Hi, as Theprof has explained, above:

To upgrade your MCSA to MCITP:SA you will need to take both 648 & 646.

The 648 is an upgrade exam and will give you 2 MCTS Certs: Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Configuration &
Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure Configuration.

You will then need the PRO 646 exam to complete the MCITP requirements. As the MCITP is retiring, I believe that this is migrating to the new MCSA: Server 2008.

N.B. The 648 upgrade exam is scheduled for retirement on 31st July 2013.
