    This just tickled me today.

For those of you outside the UK (and for many within), we have a party called the Liberal Democrats.
They rate about number 3, after the big two.

Anyway, in the news today was the story that their leader had stepped down.

His name is Sir Menzies Campbell.

For some reason, this is pronounced 'Sir Mingus'.
    Please tell me why.

How can a party succeed with a leader called 'Mingus'?

And what's even funnier, is that his friends who have been rallying around refer to him fondly as 'Ming'.

Can you imagine how awsome it would be if he became Prime Minister?

'Ahem, Mr President, please may I introduce Prime Minister Ming of the United Kingdom?'
    'Arnie, I'm bored...'
    'I'll be back!'

    :biggrin

It's pronounced 'Mingus' simply because thats the correct pronunciation. Actually, to be more accurate, it should be 'Mingees'

The name 'Menzies' does not actually have a 'Z' in it you see. I believe (though I could be wrong) that the real letter that should be in the ex-leader's name is pronounced 'yog' and does not have a counterpart in modern English. It is an old letter that was used largely in old Scots (and old English as well I think, but I may be wrong on that - I'm sure some pedant will correct me if I am) and originated in Gaelic aeons ago.

So there you go - you learn something new every day.
