ubuntu 5.10 on Virtual PC 2004

Ok here goes i have installed ubuntu 5.10 on Virtual Pc 2004 and all went well until it booted to the desktop and the screen is too wide and the graphics are messed up

Question is how do i change the graphics driver or settings without be able to see what i am doing properly

is there something similar to windows safe mode ?
