    Hello,

Im new to linux and have tried to install ubuntu 10.4 in vmware.
After the install the system seems to hang,no activity the system crashes.

Is this an issue with file system compatibility? The host is using XP pro sp2 with NTFS, vmware has set the memory to 512mb with 8GB HD. the core system is using 2gb RAM.

    Thanks for any assistance provided.

The issue isn't anything to do with compatibility as ubuntu and xp would have no idea of each others existance (both machines as far as they are concerned are running on physical hardware). Which vmware product are you using and are there any error messages in ubuntu when the system crashes or whereabouts does it get to.

    Hello Dales,

Thnaks for your reply, the version of vmware is workstation 5.5.2, after the install there is no error message just a black screen. I suppose i could try virtualbox or xen.

When you say you just get a black screen after installation, I am assuming you get to the point where it says "Restart Now or Restart Later"; dependent on whether you booted in to the Live CD or just done the install straight away - that being said, do you see all the debug messages and it asking for you to remove the disc? - granted you have mounted an .iso but you should at least see the debug messages.
