Well the courses materials are free, but they do not qualify you for a qualification or mean you are an enrolled student. I imagine getting admitted to MIT is no easy feat, and the costs must be pretty high too.

You can however at least learn the stuff even if you will not have it on paper, which seems a great benefit to all the people worldwide that would never get the chance of an MIT style education otherwise.

My Australian visa is still pending, I'm also looking at a fulltime Masters course at a University in Illinois but I'm not sure if a year out is a good idea or not.

My current contract ends this week and I've applied for a few positions abroad and will have to wait and see what happens.

Otherwise it's feet up and summer off ! :D

Thanks for this. I have just heard about this from a book I was reading.

Another site that I have been looking at is this: http://nptel.iitm.ac.in./

Although it's from India they do all the video tutorials in English. Not sure if it is up to the same level as the MIT stuff but I have found it very useful for AI lectures.

    Thanks,
    Dom

Quite a few educational institutes offer their course materials for free, the OpenU also does it.

Yes ken, there is a lot of 'free course materials', however a lot of them are quite dull and dry and consist of small snippets of text on web pages.

What I think is good about the above offerings is they are proported to have lively webcasts / learning videos.

There is similar good stuff on YouTube and Google Videos also.

I'm not sure the OpenLearn stuff includes the videos ?

I must say I've been enjoying the James May stuff on TV recently, his stuff on 'Robots', 'Blast Off', 'On The Moon' and 'The Edge of Space' was really good and 'The Story of Maths' by Marcus DuSautoy was an excellent recent OU TV series.

To tell the truth, I'm looking into studying something "outside" IT, apart from management and Engineering (either Mechanical and structural or Electrical and electronic) actually takes my fancy. I was looking into this: the City & Guilds/ECUK quals.

Free course materials and a few books may be what I'm after... a nice free push :)

Sure is mate, right now I feel like I'l never be in a position to pick up a non-IT book or crack on with the guitar.

Maybe we should start a Cert Forums band . . . . . DMarsh on Guitar, Me on Keyboards, Ken Wagner lead vocals, Craigie on the drums and Zebula on the triangle?

Plenty of nice links. I have seen the Indian videos before. Not bad.
All this is great and for free. And that what internet is for now. Wherever you are you can study ( if you have got net access).
