I have recently passed the ECDL and A+ exams. I am now looking to progress to improve my knowledge of MS end user applications, not necessarily to work in IT, more a general office management role to go with non IT qualifications.

It seems that the MCDST exam 70-272 is suitable. Can I take this without the 70-271 and qualify as MCP?

Also, I have seem some reference to Microsoft Office Specialist. How does this compare to the MCDST.

Finally, the choice of self study material does not seem to be as clear cut as with the Comptia A+. I have seen suggestions of the Glenn & Northrup MCDST Self Study. Has anyone used this?

A lot of questions!! I would be grateful for any advice/ suggestions.

Well done on the exam passes.

You say you are not looking at working in IT but more of a local resource for people? In that case I would advise you to go the MOS route as it will give you an in depth knowledge of office and that is what most people generally ask for. Also if you are not in an admin position and don't want to be you are not going to be the target audience and it would be a waste of your time.

As for it's comparison to the DST I believe they are quite similar in difficulty, but as I said the focus is very different.

As for the books most people tend to use the MS press books.

    Good Luck

B_n is right, you do get MCP with the 272.

For info on MOS or MCAS, see here.

From what you've typed above, it sounds like you're looking for a management-type position. Are you hoping that the IT skills and the certs that this will make you more employable? If so, you just need to be careful that you do continue to use the skills learnt, otherwise you'll lose them; merely having the certification won't help you fix the problems that will undoubtedly crop up.

    All the best.

    Gid.
