    First I've heard about this.

The domain name system will be liberalised next year which means you're not stuck to .co.uk or .com, you can register whatever you like certforums.comein

I read about this a little while ago - or at least that this was what they were thinking of doing - but there was going to be some kind of horrible cost implications which meant that it would only be viable for really big business.

I can see it being confusing initially - at the moment I think people are pretty much blind to the extension on a name, just assuming it's going to be .com or .co.uk. And I can just see the horrible possibilities - www.freepics.brittanyspearsnaked...

internet etiquette would dictate the use of the cokealert tag to avoid just such incidents!

    lets be fair
100k in the marketing budgets of most MID size companies is small change, let alone the big ones that spend billions on marketing

if it was sensible and formed something like

    research.microsoft
    windows.microsoft
    server.microsoft
    exchange.microsoft
    etc

then sure, maybe thats cool (I guess it just seems totally wierd to me, i've been doing DNS since i was 11)
but it sure opens the gates for the stupid ones, and i think ultimatly that will make the internet a big fat mess

lets see how it pans out, considering they denied the 'xxx' extension due to privacy concerns (err hello, because 'lotsofporn.com' was so hard to figure out?) I'm unsure why they would then approve something so drastic

    go figure

    That's very true.

Hopefully the high price tag will stop too many oiks messing about with it.
It would be nice if they could introduce something like they do for the .ltd.uk domains in the UK whereby you actually have to prove that you ARE Nike before being allowed the .nike name.

    We shall see.
