I'm using Windows XP Pro (32-Bit running on a Dell XPS720, x64) and trying to learn for my CompTIA Security+ exam.

On pages 16 and 17 the author lists an exercise with Ettercap. His instructions are simple and work just fine until I get to the following:

My problems arise at the second point (Point 1 is easily covered by me opening up gmail in Thunderbird). At point 2, I go Start>Run> telnet pop.gmail.com 110 and hit enter. All that happens is the telnet box says "Connecting to pop.gmail.com....." before it just closes itself down *&!*&!!*&!&&(!&!&*& argh!

I'd be extremely grateful if someone could highlight where I might be going wrong!!

    Thanks!!!!

As far as I know Gmail isn't POP3. It is webmail.

You need to use a POP3 email server.

Aha - after a bit of checking I see that my comment isn't quite right. :ohmy

Gmail *does* use POP3, but over a SSL connection. So port 110 isn't going to work.
